The Electric Farm: The Luv
Ultimate Vinyl
Those who know me are accustomed to getting a random call whenever I have the urge to report on a recent exciting vinyl find. But then I thought, why stop there. Just because there are only so many people I can call (or whose phone numbers I have for that matter), that's no reason not to share my LUV of music through other means. So I will periodically be sharing some of my special vinyl finds from my regular trollings at flea markets, record conventions, "dollar record" stores, and garage sales.
Bill Cowsill
Nervous Breakthrough
MGM SE 4706 (yellow promo label)
Inside the gatefold you'll find hip later period photos of Brother Bill looking kinda Gram Parsonsesque. I haven't actually listened to it yet, but it just LOOKS cool. So I'm thinking it's gonna be good, not amazing, but fun to listen to. How could I resist for only $3 at my favorite "second Sunday of every month" record convention at the catholic school in Lancaster, Penna.
P.S. If you've never heard "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" by The Cowsills—and you love bubblegum music—stop what you're doing and seek it out!
Top 10 Albums (at least for now)
If you're a record geek like me (or at least saw the movie High Fidelity and appreciate the basic art of debating music), there's a good chance you've already thought about this many times. The basic scenario is this...imagine that you're trapped on a desert island for all eternity and can have access to only 10 records. What would your list include? Now in reality, my list is pretty fluid...that is I have a tough time choosing just 10 and my choices on any given day definitely change. So here's what I'm thinking as of this moment.
- THE KINKS "Village Green Preservation Society" - perfect pop
- BEACH BOYS "Pet Sounds" - yikes, do you really need an explanation
- THE WHO "Sell Out" - even the commercials are genius
- NICK DRAKE "Bryter Layter"
- MILES DAVIS "Nefertiti" - the Wayne Shorter compositions alone
- MARGO GURYAN "Take a Picture" - I luv, luv, LUV this record
- PAUL MCCARTNEY "McCartney"
- VAN MORRISON "Veedon Fleece"
- NEIL YOUNG "On the Beach"
- SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE "Fresh"
